Health and Climate Change 2008

The DoH released an update of their 2002 report today, looking at the potential impact of climate change on our health. It makes sober reading. Heatwaves, more microbes in our water, vector [mosquitoes, ticks etc] and food borne disease mean we won’t have to travel to the Med to pick up our tummy bugs, sunstroke and skin cancer. We have already witnessed Blue Tongue in livestock in the UK for the first time ever, brought in by midges from Europe but originating in Africa. Respiratory diseases will increase due to the effect of ozone and crop yields could diminish.

On the positive side there should be fewer deaths due to cold weather, but what will happen to our annual influenza season with milder winters to incubate the virus?

2020ProfessionalOpinions

We will soon be starting a new opinion page to which friends of 2020 will have access to post up comment and opinions, links to key health and social care or science stories.

The difference with other health sites will be that the postings will be highlighting issues with a reality check, they may be accompanied by suggested solutions, will link into all the key international journals, relate to present day policy and point to issues that need to be addressed / financial implications.
